Event Review: Men’s arms only single scull repechage

Jeff STANFIELD (CAN) and Pierre PAUGAM (FRA) were neck-and-neck on the finish line in first of the men’s arms only single scull repechages. There was less than a second between the two as they crossed the line in first and second to claim their places in Sunday’s (August 27) final.

China’s LUO Xiao Hui, who was forced to re-row his heat alone yesterday in order to take part in today’s repechage after his boat broke during the original heat, just missed out on qualifying for the final after placing third.

In the second repechage, Britain’s Shaun SEWELL rowed a superb race to claim a place in the final. Italy’s Simone MIRAMONTI took the early lead, with Croatia’s Josip FRISCIC close behind. But SEWELL upped his pace midway through the race to pull into the lead and claim victory. The 31-year-old Londoner finished the race in 5:43.03, which was a good four seconds quicker than MIRAMONTI in second place and almost ten seconds faster than STANFIELD, who won the first repechage.

All four will now meet defending world champion Dominic MONYPENNY (AUS) and 2005 bronze medallist Ron HARVEY (USA) in the final.

Spain’s Luis Miguel CASTRO CARMONE, Josip FRISCIC (CRO), WONG Wo Chau (HKG), Sascha ADRIAN (GER), Moacir RAUBER (BRA) and LUO will contest the B final.
